Historical Football Kits

Coca Cola League One 2007 - 2008

Previously known as Division Three (originally the Third Division of the Football League), League One is the third tier of English football. French newcomers Vandanel have made a real impact at this level, providing kits to six of the twenty-four clubs in the division including some attractive, assymetric designs. Italian company Errea supply three clubs while giants Nike, Le Coq Sportif and Umbro provide only four clubs between them.

Designer: Bourne Red (Club Own Brand)

For the new season Bournemouth have returned to the classic red and black stripes first worn in 1970, associated with the management of John Bond and inspired by AC Milan. Their second and third choice kits in white and yellow respectively feature very different trimming styles which will make it hard for them to "mix and match" shorts and tops. Bournemouth are one of the few clubs who design and market kit under their own brand name.

The Seagulls have retained last season's first choice kit in a traditional style this season. The elegant designs are by Italian company, Errea and are completed by a third kit reminiscent of the classic Brazil kits. For the final match of the season, Brighton's chairman commissioned a special one-off kit to mark the end of the club's long running partnership with Skint Records. Above the Skint logo "Team Mates 1999-2008" was embroidered in gold.

Having spent last season wearing light blue and white quarters, Rovers have returned to a more traditional style for the new season. Their third kit commemorates their achievement in reaching Wembley twice last season although they have no plans to wear it in a first team fixture.

Carlisle United

Third

Designer: Le Coq Sportif

Carlisle turn out in an innovative and attractive design provided by Le Coq Sportif, perhaps one of the most striking new designs on offer. The club has also revived their wonderful deckchair design, last seen in the 1990s, as a third choice kit.

This is the third kit designed for Crewe by Italian company, Diadora, a restrained effort complemented by navy trim. A discrete flash of red distinguishes the white away kit.

While superficially very similar to last season's shirt, Doncaster's new hooped top features black piping and trim as well as newly styled side panels. The addition of black shorts and stockings (the first time the club has teamed these with hooped shirts) gives a distinctly old fashioned flavour. The change kit is an exact copy but in blue and white.

Each of the kits has a different sponsor associated with the energy industry: IOR, who have owned the club since 1994, sponsor their third choice kit.

Huddersfield have a new sponsor as well as a new kit designer this season, having switched from Admiral to Mitre. Their home kit is a traditional blue and white striped design but with solid blue sleeves. The black away kit is attractively set off by red and gold side panels. The three gold stars over the badge commemorate Huddersfield's achievement of three consecutive First Division titles in 1924, 1925 and 1926.

Leeds United

Designer: Admiral

Making their debut at this level are Leeds United, fallen on hard times and facing a 15 point penalty after financial irregularities last season, a punishment that seems likely to keep them in the third tier for at least this season. Because of doubts over the club's future they did not launch their new kits until the eve of the new season. Ironically they are designed by Admiral, the company that provided the groundbreaking strips of the Don Revie era.

Since 2004 Leyton Orient's kits have been provided by Vandanel who have confined themselves to variations on a theme of all-red with white trim, relatively restrained when compared with some of the O's earlier kits. The new home kit is very similar to last season's while the away kit is identical in design, with sky blue replacing red.

Luton Town

Luton have switched supplier this season and adopted Puma's new template, with flowing contrasting trim on the shirt. In a sense, this kit closes a circle going back to 1973, which is the last time the Hatters played in plain white and black. The orange that has featured less prominently in recent years is retained for their away kit.

Oldham's home kit is quite similar to those worn over the past two seasons but with the new Carlotti trim. The away kit revives the club's orange and blue outfit from the mid Sixties. It is hard to think of circumstances in which the Latics might wear their navy third kit given how similar it is to their first choice.

Southend have stuck with their smart all-navy style with this season's kit, their fourth to have been designed by Nike. The choice of a sky blue and navy kit from Nike's Classic II range seems to have backfired as it had not had an outing by late-October. When colours have clashed, the red third kit, retained from last season has been used instead.
