Croatia are awkward opponents for England so when they were awarded an early penalty things were looking up. Kane fluffed the conversion but a VAR intervention resulted in a retake and Kane made no mistake this time. Baturina equalised, curling the ball into the far right corner but Kane headed England back into the lead in the 42nd minute. On the stroke of half-time Musa volleyed home to level the scores again. After the break England improved and Bellingham put them back into the lead (47'). This time they were determined not to let their opponents back into the game and laid siege to the Croatian defence, peppering their goal with shots. Their dominance paid off when Rashford scored in the 85th minute, allowing supporters to breathe again.

The flowing football that had overwhelmed Croatia was forgotten as England laboured to bring the ball up to Ghana's well organised defence and dithered around with it. It was not until the 57th minute that England had an attempt on goal and all the while they looked vulnerable to breakaway counter-attacks.

A draw would have been enough to send Croatia through in third place but they showed their intent to earn a win here, Sucic scoring with a thunderous drive from 30 yards. The Black Stars improved in the second half and with 17 minutes to go Derrick Luckassen got on the end of a free kick to sneak one home. Ten minutes later Vlasic sneaked in unmarked to head home Luka Modric's corner.
