As the team with the highest FIFA ranking and home supporters it is almost inconceivable that the co-hosts will fail to progress to the next stage. Australia and Türkiye are also likely qualifiers.

The USMNT sparkled as they overwhelmed their opponents with three goals in the first half. Their opener came after just seven minutes when McKennie's shot cannoned off Bobadilla and into the net. Paraguay had some consolation late in the second half when the US team was caught out of position after a restart by Paraguay's goalkeeper and their opponents took advantage to work the ball into the net. The US were not finished, however, and in the eighth minute of injury time Reyna deftly placed the ball past Gill to make it 4-1.

Nestory Irankunda became Australia's youngest World Cup scorer at 20 years and 125 days to help upset Türkiye with a well taken goal in the 27th minute. Metcalfe sealed the win in the 75th minute, pouncing on the ball after some sloppy play by the Turkish defence and sending it into the bottom corner of the goal.

The US team set out from the start to dominate the game and got their reward in the 11th minute when Balogun's low cross was turned into his own goal by Burgess. Two minutes before the interval a deflection sent Sergino Dest’s shot looping towards goal where Alex Freeman managed to get to it before the goalkeeper and head home. The result guarantees the United States a place in the knock out phase.

Paraguay took the lead after 64 seconds when Matias Galarza fired home from outside the penalty area. The Turkish team surged forwards in search of the equaliser and received a boost when Miguel Almiron placed his hand over his mouth during a confrontation with a Turkish defender. After a VAR review referee Ivan Barton sent Almiron off under the new rules introduced before the World Cup finals. Overall Türkiye had 32 attempts on goal but could not make their dominance count and they are eliminated.

With the USA already through to the next phase and Türkiye eliminated there was nothing but pride at stake in this game. Auston Trusty got the US off to a perfect start with a goal from a corner in the 3rd minute. Arda Guler and Baris Yilmaz then scored to give Türkiye the lead but just after half-time Sebastian Berhalter equalised.The match looked set to finish as an honorable draw but in the 98th minute, with the last kick of the game, Ayhan forced the ball into the net from Can Uzun's cross.

It was a nervy affair but in the end the Socceroos confirmed their place in the next phase while Paraguay had to wait to find out if they would go through in third place, which in the end they did.
