FIFA World Cup Group C
Despite the enormous costs of attending this World Cup, 10,000 members of the Tartan Army arrived in Providence, their unofficial base on Rhode Island, some having remortgaged their homes to make the trip. With Brazil hot favourites and Haiti rank outsiders it may come down to the match between Morocco and Scotland to decide who finishes as runners up. Morocco arrived with something to prove as their AFCON title remains in dispute.

Two evenly matched sides served up a thriller in New Jersey. Morocco, currently AFCON champions (pending appeal) showed no fear of the fancied Brazil side and took the lead in the 21st minute through Ismael Saibari who gleefuly lobbed the Brazilian 'keeper. Eleven minutes later Vinícius Júnior cut in from the flank and fired a powerful drive past the 'keeper. At least one commentator was delighted that a player known as Vini Jnr had scored in New Jersey. The game ebbed and flowed in the second half but there were no more goals. Morocco, however, had anounced themselves as serious contenders.

Along with the 10,000 or so members of the Tartan Army who arrived for the match in a fleet of yellow school buses, millions more stayed up into the early hours to witness Scoland's return to the world stage. Scotland started well but faded and Haiti were getting on top. In the 32nd minute, however, John McGinn pounced on a clearance and fired home thanks to two deflections. It was messy but no-one with Scottish allegiance cared. Fans expected Scotland to kick on but it was Haiti who dominated the rest of the game and it was a considerable relief to the supporters when the final whistle went.

A goal just 70 seconds from the kick-off rocked Scotland on their heels and left their hopes of progress hanging by a thread. The goal was scored by Ismael Saibari who ran past the Scottish defenders to take down Brahim Diaz's well-aimed pass before slamming the ball into the roof of the net. The match ebbed and flowed and in the final 15 minutes Scotland pressed as hard as they could but time eventually ran out.

It took 20 minutes for Brazil to get started but when Vini Jr fired in a shot that goalkeeper Johnny Placide could not hold Matheus Cunha was on hand to tap the ball home. Thirteen minutes later these two combined again, Vini Jr slipped the ball to Cunha who lashed it into the goal. Brazil's third came in added time at the end of the first half, Vini Jr sliding the ball under the advancing Placide. In the second half Brazil were content to manage the game with the result assured.

Defeat at the hands of Brazil is never a disgrace but Scotland had hoped for so much more than this. Brazil took the lead in the seventh minute when Scott McKenna failed to clear, Rayan pinched the ball and sent it to Vinicius who slotted it home. Brazil looked sharp while Scotland finished the first half without an attempt on goal. Vini Jr scored again three minutes after the break and Matheus Cunha made it 3-0 on the hour. Scotland now have to wait to see it they can qualify as one of the best third placed teams but with just 3 points and a goal difference 0-3 it does not look good.

Morocco came from behind twice in the first half against a spirited Haiti team. After the break the north African team looked stronger and late goals from substitutes Soufiane Rahimi (78') and Gessime Yassine (89') secured victory and progress into the Knock Out phase.
