When João Neves headed Portugal into an early lead in the sixth minute it looked as if his team would steam roller their central Africam opponents but things turned out very differently. DR Congo played their way into the match and deep into added time Yoanne Wissa headed home seconds before half-time. After the break DR Congo had more shots on goal than their opponents and while Portugal enjoyed 75% of possession they could not make it count where it mattered. Ronaldo became the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup game but he looked seriously out of sorts and the African team thoroughly deserved their point.

Colombia's Luis Diaz was the key player in this end-to-end thriller. He set up Daniel Munoz for the opening goal and scored himself in the second half (65'). This came five minutes after Abbosbek Fayzullaev had equalised for Uzbekistan. The win was not sealed until the 99th minute when Campaz headed home from Cucho Hernandez's cross.

After his disappointing performance against DR Congo, Ronaldo delivered. In the 6th minute he opened the scoring with a fine close range strike and in the 39th minute he scored again, steering the ball past the goalkeeper. Mendes also got his name on the score sheet scoring directly from a free-kick (17'), Nematov put through his own goal (60') and Leao wrapped it up just before full-time.

Daniel Munoz was Colombia's most dangerous player and he had the ball in the net in the 6th minute only to be ruled narrowly offside. Colombia dominated but it was not until the 76th minute that they broke the deadlock, Munoz's left-footed shot taking a deflection to wrong foot the Congolese goalkeeper. The South Americans had the ball in the net twice more but both efforts were disallowed.

Ronaldo was once again very disappointing as Colombia's defenders were able to keep him quiet. In fact the South Americans were the better side and in injury time they thought they had won but Davinson Sánchez's header was ruled offside. Nevertheless, it was Colombia who topped the group with Portugal in second place.

DR Congo came from behind to secure their place in the Round of 32 where they will meet England. The White Wolves were determined to go out with a bang and Shomurodov had the ball in the net after just 20 seconds but was ruled offside. Shomurodov did score in the tenth minute. As the game wore on Congo applied more pressure and were rewarded when Wissa scored from a penalty (68'). Ten minutes later Fiston Mayele dinked the ball over the 'keeper after Meschack Elia’s shot was deflected. In injury time Wissa made it 3-1.
