Senegal started strongly and had plenty of chances in the first half. They even had the ball in the net but the effort was ruled offside. In the second half it was France who made the running and in the 66th minute Kylian Mbappé slipped the ball past Senegal's 'keeper to equal Olivier Giroud's record of goals for the national team. Late in the game a flurry of goals came, Barcola scoring in the 82nd minute. Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal (90+5) but immediately Mbappé made it 3-1 (90+6) with a long range strike and became France's all time record goal scorer.

Kylian Mbappé scored twice to become joint second in the all-time World Cup goalscorers list behind Lionel Messi. His first came in the 14th minute, a left foot strike from the edge of the penalty area into the far corner. The second half was delayed by two hours as heavy storms rolled in bringing lightning and torrential rain. The spectators were urged to take shelter in the stadium concourses and when the storms finally cleared it appeared the vast majority had stayed to resume their seats. Mbappé scored again after the Iraqi defenders made a hash of controlling a goal kick (54') and Ousmane Dembélé wrapped things up with just over an hour played.

To finish off this breathless spell, Haaland scored again from close range. Sarr struck again in injury time but Norway were able to hold on and go through to the knock out stages.

Both sides had already qualified so at stake was which would top the group and, at least in theory, have the easier pathway to the final. A hat-trick by Ousmane Dembélé answered the question emphatically. In the build up to his third goal which came in the 32nd minute, every member of the French team touched the ball before he finished. Norway did have a brief moment of hope when Thelo Aasgaard scored just one minute after Dembélé scored his second (20') but by half-time the match was pretty much over. Désiré Doué put the icing on the cake in added time (90+4).
