FIFA Women's World Cup 2015 Knock Out Stages

2015 fifa women's world cup posterSingle yellow cards accrued were cancelled after the quarter-finals so that no player would miss the final if they were booked in the semi-final.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter decided that he would not travel to Vancouver to present the World Cup Trophy to the winners for "personal reasons." It is safe to assume these included a very personal aversion to being arrested by Canadian authorities on behalf of the FBI, who, in May, had felt the collars of 14 senior FIFA officials in their investigation into allegations of "rampant and systemic" corruption.

Patient defending allowed England to match Japan whose short-passing moves rarely threatened to get them into a scoring position. Both sides had dubious penalties and as the game went into injury time, there seemed every prospect that England could win in extra-time. In a stunning finale, however, Laura Bassett lunged to intercept a sweeping cross only to divert the ball onto the underside of the bar and into her own goal.

The night belonged to Carli Lloyd whose hat trick helped the USA build an insurmountable 4-0 lead within the first 16 minutes. Japan mounted a spirited come back and managed to pull it back to 4-2 after 52 minutes but within 60 seconds Tobin Heath had restored the American's three-goal lead and effectively finished the game off. This was the United States' third World Cup, their first in 16 years.
