England had not beaten their neighbours since 1974 and the French team were clearly superior in this match. A sell-out 13,000 crowd had been predicted but the locals, including those from the French-speaking suburb of Dieppe, stayed away as dark rain clouds hovered.

France, ranked third in the world, became victims of the biggest shock in the history of the Women's World Cup. The wonderfully named Lady Andrade raced clear to score in the 19th minute. The French pressed for the rest of the game but Las Cafeteras (the Coffee Growers - not patronising at all that) held on and in injury time Usme added a second.

Four years after quitting the game due to depression, a recovered Fran Kirby scored the opening goal to keep England's hopes alive. Substitute Karen Carney made the game safe in the 82nd minute. An error by Bardley in England's goal allowed Mexico to score in injury time but it made no difference to the result.

France rolled over Mexico to ensure they went on to the last 16. As ever FIFA's ludicrous regulations required an unnecesary change of kit. This result sent Mexico home.

England built a healthy 2-0 lead and held on to it until the fourth minute of injury time when Lady Andrade scored with an audacious lob. Both sides progessed to the next stage.
