Switzerland's three points were enough to take them through as one of the best third place finishers.

Cameroon qualified as runners up in the 2014 African Women's Championship. Women's football is in its infancy in Ecuador: the Ministry of Sport established the first inter club competition just two years ago. Their national team qualified via the inter-zonal play-offs, beating Trinidad & Tobago with a very late goal in the second leg.

Ranked 53rd in the world, Cameroon made short work of their fellow debutants, scoring three times in the space of 11 minutes during the first half. Gaelle Enganamouit scored a hat-trick.

A 29th minute penalty, awarded after the Swiss goalkeeper crashed into Kozue Andu when chasing a 50-50 ball, was enough for the defending champions. The Swiss fought back gamely but Japan held on.

The Swiss were 2-0 up at half-time but after the interval they ran riot. Fabienne Humm scored a hat-trick in just five minutes then Ramona Bachman scored twice in two minutes before completing her own hat-trick with nine minutes to go.

Cameroon came from behind to record a fine win over a team ranked 34 places above them and go into the last 16. Switzerland's ten goals in their previous match now came into play and ensured that they would also go forward as one of the best third placed teams thanks to superior goal difference.
