FIFA World Cup 2002 Knock Out Stages

fifa world cup 2002 posterTo avoid excessive travelling during the knock-out phase the qualifiers from Groups A, C, F and H were based in Japan while those from Groups B, D, E and G played in South Korea. The Golden Goal rule was in effect and if there was no scoring in extra time the match was decided by a penalty competition.

South Korea had a memorable tournament as did Turkey, appearing in their first finals since 1954 and the two teams contested the third place play-off while the two strongest teams from Europe and South America, Germany and a resurgent Brazil respectively, met in the final.

Larsson put Sweden ahead in the 11th minute but Senegal fought back gamely and equalised eight minutes before the break. The game flowed with the Africans dominating possession and peppering Sweden's goal but the Europeans were more accurate with their scoring attempts. With the score still standing at one apiece, the match went into extra time and was settled by a Golden Goal scored by Camara, his second of the game, in the 104th minute.

Spain led after eight minutes and as the final whistle was imminent seemed set on progressing having survived Ireland's pressure and a missed penalty. Then in the final minute, Hierro was adjudged to have pulled Quinn's shirt in the penalty area and Robbie Keane converted the kick. Ireland dominated in extra-time when Spain were reduced to ten men after substitute Abelda had to go off with an injury but there were no more goals. In the penalty competition, Ireland trailed 2-1 after both sides had taken four kicks: Finnan scored to keep the Irish in the match but Mendietta then slotted home Spain's fifth attempt and the match was over.

18 June 2002

After Ahn Jung-Hwan missed a penalty in the fourth minute and then Vieri had put Italy into the lead in the 18th minute it looked as if Korea would join their co-hosts in sitting out the rest of the competition. Italy sat back to defend their lead and in the closing minutes paid the price for their lack of ambition when Seol Ki-Hyeon rifled home the equaliser. Francesco Totti damaged his side's prospects even further when he was sent off in extra-time. With four minutes before the match went to penalties, Anh Jung-Hwan climbed above Maldini to head a chipped cross past Buffon.

Brazil

England

Brazil 2 England 1

Shizuoka Stadium, Shizuoka (47,436)
21 June 2002

After Michael Owen scored in the 23rd minute, English supporters dared to hope that Sven Göran Eriksson's team could record a famous win. Hearts sank when Rivaldo levelled the score in time added on at the end of the first half. Then, five minutes after the restart David Seaman completely misjusdged a speculative free-kick by Ronaldinho, which he could only push onto the underside of the bar and into the net. England faded badly and even after Ronaldinho was sent off in the 58th minute, they never looked as if they believed they could get back into the match.

Germany won the match but they needed a big slice of luck pie as the United States team dominated for long stretches and Oliver Kahn had to pull off several excellent saves in the first half. Michael Ballack scored the vital goal in the 39th minute and although the Americans pressed hard in the second half, there was no way through the superb German defence.

A superb goal by Ronaldo four minutes into the second half settled Brazil's second meeting with Turkey. After muscling his way into the Turkish penalty area he toe-poked the ball past Rüştü Reçber in the Turkish goal. Turkey, who have never previously appeared in a the semi-finals were far from overawed and had their share of chances. Brazil, once again playing with attacking flair, were denied on several occasions by Rüştü.

The Koreans pressed in the second-half but the spark had gone from the game although Ahn Jung-Hwan did get a consolation goal in injury time.

Remarkably this was the first time the two most consistent teams in the history of the World Cup had met in the competition. An open match was settled by two fine goals from Ronaldo, making up for his poor display in the 1998 final in Paris, earning him the Golden Boot award and confirming his status as the best striker in the world.
