Ireland secured a point against the much fancied Cameroon team, coming from behind to wipe out the African side's first half lead. In the second half Ireland were the better side and only the woodwork and some desperate defending prevented them from getting the winner they deserved.

Germany brushed a feeble Saudi Arabia aside with four goals in each half. The Germans had 26 attempts on goal of which 14 were on target whereas the Saudi team managed just one shot on goal in the entire game.

In the dying seconds of the game, Robbie Keane ran onto a flick from Niall Quinn and lashed the ball home for a dramatic equaliser that kept Irish hopes alive. Ireland had played with character against a German team that was content to sit back and hit Ireland on the break once Klose had given them the lead in the 18th minute.

Cameroon struggled and failed to score the hatful of goals they expected. They were denied a penalty in the opening minute when Daniel Ngom Kome was brought down in the Saudi penalty area. They also had "goals" disallowed in the 11th and 46th minutes and had to rely on just the one goal scored by Samuel Eto'o (66').

In an ill-tempered match a record 16 yellow cards were shown and Germany's Ramelow was sent off in the 40th minute followed later by Cameroon's Suffo (76'). Five minutes into the second half, substitute Marco Bode put Germany ahead and moments after Suffo's departure, Klose made it 2-0.
