There are no easy groups in the Euro finals but this one was really challenging, pitting the current holders, Portugal, against former winners France and Germany. Hungary were, on paper, the weakest team but they did have the advantage of playing two matches on home territory.

In front of a capacity crowd (the Puskás Aréna was the only Euro venue to allow full attendance), Hungary held on in the face of a Portuguese onslaught until the 84th minute when Guerriero broke the deadlock. Three minutes later Portugal's talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo, converted a penalty and in added time, he danced through the Hungarian defence to collect the ball and guide it past the goalkeeper. Ronaldo became the first player to appear in five European Championships and became the tournaments all-time leading goal scorer.
France
Germany
A high quality match was settled by an unfortunate own goal from Hummels (20') who diverted Hernandez's close range cross into his own net. France were marginally the better side, hitting the post and having two more goals disallowed for offside.
Hungary

The packed staidum erupted when Attila Fiola burst through to slot the ball past the French goalkeeper in the second minute of added time at the end of the first half. Despite dominating the match throughout, France were less than impressive although Griezmann did equalise in the 66th minute.
Portugal

Portugal started well enough, Ronaldo putting them ahead after a quarter of an hour but then the sky fell in. Own goals in quick succession (Dias 35', Guerreiro 39'), both the result of hard crosses across the face of the goal, put Germany ahead. Havertz and Gosens made it 4-1 in the second half and although Jota pulled one back for Portugal there was no way back for the title holders.

A penalty converted by Ronaldo (30') gave Portugal the initial advantage but Benzema equalised, also from the penalty spot in added time at the end of the first half. He put France ahead with a fine goal from open play shortly after the restart but on the hour Portugal were awarded another penalty and there was never and doubt who would take it. Ronaldo's strike made him equal with Ali Dael of Iran as all-time leading international goalscorer and ensured Portugal would go into the next phase.
Germany

Gemany had to come from behind twice to salvage the game and stay in the competition. Szalai gave his team a shock lead with a diving header in the eleventh minute. Deep into the second half Havertz equalised but just 90 seconds later Schafer restored Hungary's lead with a header. Germany were now facing elimination in front of their own fans but with six minutes left, substitute Goretzka equalised. Germany finished level with Portugal on four points but were placed second by virtue of having beaten Portugal in an earlier group match.
