2020 European Football Championship Group D

euro 2020 logoHosts for Group D were England and Scotland. England came into the competition with one of the strongest squads for many years while Scotland were appearing in their first finals of any major tournament since 1998. That they would do so at Hampden Park added to the emotion of the occasion.

Around 9,000 supporters created a carnival atmosphere at Hampden Park but their exuberance was punctured when Patrik Schick headed home a corner just before half-time. Scotland rallied but in the 52nd minute disaster struck. A Scottish attack broke down on the edge of the Czech penalty area and the ball broke to Schick at the halfway line: he looked up and noticed that the Scottish goalkeeper, Marshall, had wandered up the pitch before unleashing a remarkable long range shot that traveled over 45 meteres before landing in the goal.

Playing with five across the back, Scotland were always going to be hard to beat. They played with determination against an English team that was ponderous and one-paced. Despite the restricted attendance, the Scottish supporters created a typically raucous atmosphere.

Vlasic put Croatia ahead in the 17th minute but a thundering drive by McGregor just before the break sent 12,000 wild. In the second-half, however, it was Croatia who dominated. Moments after McGinn missed the chance to bundle the ball into the Croation goal, the visitors retook the lead, Kovacic stabbing the ball home with the outside of his right boot. A glancing header from a corner by Perisic ended Scottish hopes and even if their tournament was over, their passionate fans blew the roof off Hampden with their singing as the final whistle blew. Croatia finished second by virtue of having scored more goals than the Czech Republic

In a bright start, Sterling looped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper only to see it hit the outside of the right-hand post. In the 12th minute Grealish lobbed the 'keeper for Sterling to nod home from close range at the far post. The game descended into something of a slog and while the Czechs rarely threatened to score, England's defence had a few anxious moments.
