David Villa scored a hat-trick as Spain showed their quality. Pavlyuchenko's late consolation goal was cancelled out by Fàbregas in the 91st minute.

Sweden put on a stubborn display and as the match moved into injury-time, a draw seemed certain, even through most of it was played in Sweden's half of the field. Then, in the 92nd minute, David Villa struck. The result of the match in Salzburg later that day assured Spain of finishing in first place.

Russia's goal came after the Greek goalkeeper, Nikopolodis, needlessly chased a cross out to the touchline where Sergei Semak beat him to the ball and hooked it over his head for Zyryanov to score the simplest of goals. This result meant the winners of Euro 2004 were eliminated.

Against the odds, Charisteas headed Greece into the lead just before half-time. This goaded the Spanish team, made up of reserves, into action, Daniel Güiza scoring the winner two minutes from full-time.
