A torrential downpour favoured the Swiss and their long-ball tactics rather than the close passing style of the Turks and the co-hosts took the lead just after the half-hour. As the rain eased in the second half the game opened up and Turkey drew level. A draw would have left both teams with the chance to progress but deep into added time, Arda Turan's shot was deflected into the net and Switzerland were out.

After establishing a two goal lead with 30 minutes left, the Czechs were on their way to the next phase. Turan pulled one back for Turkey in the 75th minute and then, in a sensational climax, Nihat Kahcevi equalised in the 87th minute. Had the scores remained level, a penalty shoot-out would have decided the result as both team had identical records but Kahcevi scored again two minutes later. Turkey finished equal on points with Portugal but in second place due to the head-to-head result of their earlier match.
