A goal down at half-time, the Danes rallied and mounted attack after attack in the second half but left themselves vulnerable to France's quick counter and they conceded a second on 64 minutes. Wiltford completed the scoring in the final seconds.

Dutch supporters had a frustrating evening and their team were fortunate to finish up with all the points. The Czech Republic twice hit the woodwork and defended resolutely as the home team struggled to find their stride. It needed a penalty in the final minute of the game to break the deadlock and send the home supporters home happy.

Both teams put on a display of skilful, attacking football. The world champions took the lead through Thierry Henry in the eighth minute but a 35th minute penalty made it all square. Both teams were given a standing ovation as they came off at half-time and the second-half resumed at the same hectic pace. France went ahead on the hour and succesfully defended their lead for the remaining 30 minutes.

Both sides were already eliminated but the game was still played with commitment. The goalkeepers did well to keep it goaless until just after an hour had been played and then Vladimír Šmicer scored twice from close range in three minutes to secure victory for the Czechs.

With both teams already through to the next phase, the fans were looking forward to an exhibition match between the co-hosts and the world champions. France rested most of their first team but nevertheless this was an enthralling encounter. The Dutch twice came from behind and then, eight minutes after Frank de Boer had equalised with a thundering free-kick, Zenden latched onto a long clearance and slotted home the winner.
