UEFA Euro 2000 Group C

euro 2000 logoYugoslavia made their first appearance in the Euros since the international embargo, imposed during the civil wars, was lifted in 1997. The team was made up of Serbian and Montenegrin players whose homelands comprised the rump Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The draw placed Slovenia in the same group, the first time the two nations had met on the football field since Slovenia seceded from Yugoslavia in 1991.

Spain got off to a catastrophic start against the unfancied Norwegians in a match that lacked any fluency. Norway were tough and tireless opponents who concentrated on the long ball game. Their moment came in the 66th minute when Steffen Iverson put away a headed goal.

In a match charged with political significance for supporters, the underdogs took a sensational three-goal lead. Yugoslavia, reduced to ten men after Mihajlovic was sent off, then mounted a remarkable come back and scored three times in just six minutes in the second half. Slovenia almost scored what would have been the winner in the last seconds but Ivan Dudic cleared off the line from Milinovic's effort.

An early goal settled Spanish nerves and they continued to have the upper hand. In the 59th minute, however, Zlatko Zahovič scored for Slovenia with only their second shot of the match to level the score. Within a minute Spain restored their lead after Mendietta beat four defenders before laying the ball off to Etxeberria who scored from close range.

Savo Milošević put the much-changed Yugoslav team ahead in the eighth minute and their defence proved more than capable of mastering Norway's direct tactics.

Yugoslavia twice took the lead only for Spain to hit back almost immediately. With his team reduced to ten men, Milošević put Yugoslavia ahead again after 75 minutes and as the match went into injury time, victory seemed assured. Then Aberlado was pulled down in a packed penalty area and Mendietta scored from the penalty. Moments later, with six minutes of added time played, Alfonso latched onto a knock down to score the winner. The stunned Yugoslav players remained on the pitch until the result from Arnhem was confirmed: the draw there meant that they would join Spain in the next stage despite this defeat.

With all four teams in Group C in with a chance of progressing, both sides went out for the win but could not find a goal. With Yugoslavia leading in Bruges, a draw would have been good enough for Norway and they sat back while Slovenia, who needed three points, pressed hard. In the end, Spain's remarkable extra-time come back meant they topped the group while Yugoslavia went through by virtue of having beaten Norway in their match.
