FIFA World Cup 1970 Group 4

world cup 1970 posterPeru, making their first appearance since 1930, were a revelation, playing all out attacking football with complete disregard for defence. West Germany brought the core of their 1966 squad strengthened with the excellent Sepp Maier now automatic first choice in goal and a remarkable young striker, Gerd Müller. Debutants Morocco aquited themselves with honour, giving West Germany a fright and drawing with Bulgaria.

The Bulgarians came up with their own unique solution to playing in high temperatures by wearing shirts with deep scooped necks.

Just two days before the match 100,000 people perished in Peru's worst ever earthquake and the team wore black ribbons as a mark of respect. Bulgaria scored the tournament's first goal - an early Dermendzhiev strike on his 29th birthday - to lead 1-0 at half-time. In the 49th minute, Bonev put them 2-0 up. Within seconds, Gallardo pulled one back for Peru and five minutes later Chumpitaz equalised. Cubillas scored Peru's third (73') to complete a remarkable comeback. Peruvian striker Pedro León is the only person to play in a finals match in a town whose name matched his surname.

West Germany did not have it all their own way against the North African team, who were making their World Cup Finals debut, and found themselves trailing at half-time to a 21st minute goal by Houmane. Seeler, playing in his fourth World Cup, and Müller, scored in the second half to spare the Germans embarrassment. The Moroccan team made their own little bit of history by introducing numbers on their shorts for the first time in the World cup finals.

Peru ran out comfortable winners, with Cubillas (twice) and Challe scoring their three goals in an eleven-minute spell during the second half. It could have been even more convincing as León missed good chances throughout, including hitting the bar from five yards out, and Sotil had an effort disallowed late on. Incidentally, the referee was Tofik Bakhramov – that 'Russian linesman' from the 1966 Final.

Nikodimov put Bulgaria into the lead after 12 minutes from a free kick, but West Germany soon fought back and were 2-1 ahead at half-time, thanks to Libuda (20 mins) and Müller (27). In the second half the Germans extended their lead with goals from Müller (52, pen) and Seeler (67). Müller completed his hat-trick with a goal in the 88th minute, followed immediately by Bulgaria's second goal, scored by Todor Kolev, whose brother Ivan played in the 1962 and 1966 World Cups.

Gerd Müller scored his second hat-trick in successive games (19, 26 and 39 mins) to put his side 3-0 up as half-time approached. Although Peru pulled one back on the stroke of half-time – Cubillas, his fourth of the tournament – there would be no miraculous recovery in the second half this time out. Nor was there any great need, as both teams were already through to the quarter-finals.

With nothing at stake, the teams played out an honourable draw, although this appeared to be Bulgaria's best chance of winning a finals match for the first time. As it was, Morocco became the first African team to avoid defeat in the finals. Some estimates for the real crowd figure are as low as 1,500.
