FIFA World Cup 1930 Group 3
As hosts, Uruguay were seeded in Group 3 but because the brand new Estadio Centenario was not ready they did not play their opening match until five days into the tournament. The team had spent the previous four weeks in a training camp under strict discipline and were under considerable pressure to win the tournament. The soccer-mad King Carol II of Romania had insisted that his national team participate and threatened to close down a UK oil company operating in the country unless their chief executive granted three months paid leave to employees who were members of the team. Carol joned in training sessions on the long voyage to Montevideo and personally picked the team.
