Scottish Championship 2014 - 2015

spfl logoWith Rangers, Hearts and Hibernian all in the second tier, this season will be much more interesting than the Premier league, where it is hard to see anyone challenging Celtic.

Alloa's first kit is unchanged and a new blue/yellow alternative was revealed in September, a combination similar to that seen in 2009-10.

Cowdenbeath retained their place in the Championship after beating Dunfermline in the play-off final. Their new first kit retains the familiar blue/white/red theme while the shirt incorporates Uhlsport's latest contribution to football fashion. Iran wore the same template in the World Cup for their change kit but somehow I don't see fans adopting "Blue Iran" as their nickname for the team.

The excellent retro strip worn for the last two seasons have evidently been popular because this season Dumbarton are wearing a replica of the original version first seen in 1969.

The latest Puma design with contrasting shoulders and inset panels is very smart but we're not sure it deserves the description "quiet sophistication" offered on the official club website. Curiously the strips were launched with navy shorts matched with the navy shirts while the alternative was all-white. The shorts were switched round when the season started.

Designer: Adidas

Sponsor: Foundation of Hearts (2nd)

Hearts' supporters are just relieved that their club has survived after the financial trauma of last season and can now rebuild. The new first kit, which will be worn without sponsorship, is a tribute to the Hearts team that joined up en masse in 1914. The new Argentina styled change strip features the crest of the Foundation of Hearts, a gift from a grateful board to the supporters' movement that saved the club and which will, in due course, take over ownership.

Hibs lost their place in the Premier League after a dramatic two leg play-off with Hamilton which was finally decided on penalties. The new first strip revives the outfit worn in the 1920s and is a tribute to the team's "Famous Five", their legendary foward line, the last member of which, Lawrie Reilly, died last year. It is such a shame that this fine gesture is disfigured by sponsorship from a bookmaker.

Livi have taken up with Joma after wearing Adidas kits for the last two seasons. The result is a very nice first choice strip with minimal trim complemented by an all-purple reserve kit.

The Doonhamers are once again wearing contrasting white shorts after playing in all blue for the last two seasons. Their Joma kits are straightforward and all elements are interchangeable.

Designer: Puma

Sponsor: Val McDermid

Raith are keeping their shirt from last season, which is now sponsored by the crime novelist Val McDermid, certainly the first time an author has sponsored a team shirt. The outfit is now teamed with navy shorts and white socks, reversing last season's style. The change strip commemorates seven Raith Rovers players who fought as members of the 16th Royal Scots battalion in the First World War. The words "McCrae's Battalion" are embroidered below the crest to honour the commanding officer while the colours are those of the Hunting Stewart tartan worn by the Royal Scots Regiment.

Rangers march back to the top tier continues but quite what they are up to with the Stella McCartney rip off third shirt is anyone's guess. Is it really appropriate, given the club's historical association with the worst excesses of unionism to be wearing the union flag? And is it appropriate in the run up to the referendum on Scottish independence for the club to making such an overtly political statement?

The home strip is a standard Puma design enhanced with red trim at the collar and the year of Rangers' formation, 1872, printed onto the sleeve and waist band.
