Having sunk to their lowest ever FIFA ranking in the previous decade (129th in September 2010), Northern Ireland made steady progress and started 2020 ranked 36th. Although they failed qualify directly for Euro 2020 they had a second chance thanks to their placing in the UEFA Nations League but lost to Slovakia in the play-off final held in Belfast.

Aside from an all-over brush pattern on the shirt, the latest Adidas kit launched in November 2019, was nothing to write home about. The change strip was launched in March 2020 and featured mint green trim and socks.

The decision to introduce quartered shirts was a nod to the tops worn in 1996-98 although the originals were in green and dark blue (the original colours of the Ireland team). The two shades of green in the new versions was to represent the varied landscape of the countryside. This was available with green shorts (worn against Slovenia and Denmark in the Euro 2024 qualifiers) and white socks. The yellow change strip was a first for the team which had never previously played in the colour. It was intended to unveil this in the Euro qualifier against Greece in Athens but in the event the green shirts were used. The only time the yellow kit appeared (with yellow socks) was against San Marino in March 2023.

Adidas stuck with the two shades of green theme but with the addition of white flashes that were the signature of the German company's Euro 2024 kits. The graphic on the vertical stripes represented soundwaves to evoke supporters chanting at Windsor Park. The alternative was white with ice green accents that also bear the sound wave motif.
