Irn Bru Scottish Second Division 2010 - 2011

irn bru sfl logoPlayers in the third tier of Scottish football are by and large part-time professionals. Full-time clubs like Airdrie that are relegated from the First Division have to carefully consider if they can afford to continue to pay full-time wages given the small attendances and limited revenues at this level.

Airdrie were relegated in 2009 but given a reprieve when Livingston were dispatched to the Third Division, which means they have the doubtful distinction of having been relegated from the Scottish First Division twice in consecutive seasons.

The new home kit is an elegant revival of the strip worn by Airdrieonians in the early Sixties, whose heritage United claim. Most neutral observers, however, recognise that the present club used to be Clydebank.

Alloa Athletic

Designer: Pendle

Sponsor: MTE

Alloa narrowly missed out on last season's divisional title, having finished with the same number of points as champions Stirling Albion and then failed to negotiate the play-offs. In recent years the club has made only minor updates to its home kits, trying to secure valuable revenue streams without alienating supporters. To their credit, they retain their strips for two seasons. This season's contribution is perhaps the smartest of their recent Pendle outfits and features a rather jolly new crest.

The away strip is in Pendle's Porto template.

Third

Designer: Nike

Sponsor: Paligap

Ayr were relegated from the First Division last season. They have switched to Nike in familiar templates. The original publicity photos showed all-white and all-black strips but the manager decided to switch the shorts to achieve a more traditional look for the home kit.

The third strip is intended for the reserves to use as a change kit but might be called upon by the first team.

There are no surprises with Dumbarton's latest Surridge strip, which adds pinstripes to their customary gold shirts. As usual, there is a hint of white in the strip, this season below the arm seam. Last season's popular third strip now becomes Dumbarton's away set.

East Fife are wearing the same home strip as last season, which means that their shirts have remained unchanged apart from different sponsors since 2008. A new white away kit appears for the first time. Last season's red away strip is now used as third choice.

Third

Designer: Pendle

Sponsor: Orchard Timber Products Ltd

Forfar take their place in the Second Division thanks to the play-offs. They have retained the home strip that was adopted after they dropped Bukta in October of last year. A smart new away strip in white and light blue is introduced while the claret and blue away strip from last season becomes their third choice.

Designer: Errea

After the traumatic events that almost saw the club go out of business last summer, Livi were convincing champions of the Third Division, winning the title with a 15-point margin.

Designer: Umbro

Sponsor: Les Taylor Group

Last season's blue shirts are retained but white shorts replace the black ones worn last season, to achieve an altogether more traditional appearance. The black and white trim on the shirt is a hangover from Umbro's fiddly templates of two years ago.

The addition of light blue as an accent colour may not please traditionalists among Stenny's supporters. It does, at least, provide a link with the new away strip.
