Background
Merthyr joined the Southern League in 1909 and eventually became founder members of the Third Division when the Southern League First Division was incorporated into the League in 1920. The club struggled to survive in an area where Rugby Union was the popular game of the people and which was struck extremely hard by the recession that swept South Wales in the Twenties. In 1930, having finished a distant last, Merthyr applied for re-election for the third time in ten years and lost their place to Thames Association. In 1934 the club was disbanded.
In 1945 a new club, Merthyr Tydfil FC was formed and currently plays in the English Southern League.
