European Cup Finals 2010 - 2019

cech & drogba and champions league trophy 2012The Champions League now started at the end of June with the qualifying rounds followed by a play-off round in August. The ten qualifiers then joined 22 seeded teams in the group stage, held through the autumn while teams eliminated in the last two rounds entered the Europa League. The draw for the knock out stages was held in December with the 16 surviving teams playing their matches between February and April. The top two in each group went forward to the knock-out phase while the third placed teams entered the Europa League. The final was held, as is traditional, in the second half of May. A total of 76 teams from the 52 UEFA associations participated in the 2011-12 competition.

Although Bayern had most of the possession, Inter's counter-attacking strategy proved more than enough. They scored in the 35th minute and comfortably defended their leading, adding a second mid way through the second half.

Despite having what amounted to home advantage, United were given a lesson by the supremely talented Barcelona team, whose ability to retain possession and ping the ball around reduced the Reds to playing long balls up to their forwards on the rare occasions that they had the ball. Barca took the lead after 27 minutes but Rooney equalised seven minutes later, much against the run of play. Two second half goals gave Barcelona their fourth European title and their third in six seasons.

Chelsea had knocked out Barcelona in the semi-finals but Bayern, playing in their home stadium, were firm favourites. Indeed, the Bavarian team were in control for most of the game and when they took the lead with seven minutes to go, that seemed to be that. Didier Drogba, however, equalised with two minutes of normal time left. There was no further score in extra-time so the match went to penalties. After Petr Čech tipped Schweinsteiger's penalty onto the post, Drogba, playing in his last match for Chelsea, slotted home the winner.

The first ever all-German Champions League final proved to be an enthralling business and a fine advertisement for the Bundesliga. Twelve months after losing out to Chelsea in their own stadium, Bayern triumphed thanks to Arjen Robben who, in the 89th minute, pounced on a back-heeled pass on the edge of the penalty area, beat the last defender and slotted the ball calmly past the goalkeeper.

After last year's all-German affair, the 2014 final featured teams from the same city for the first time. Real trailed for most of the game but survived after Sergio Ramos scored with his head in the 93rd minute to take the match into extra time. Atletico wilted and Real were ruthless in demolishing their rivals to take the European title for the tenth time.

The Champions League final was held in Berlin for the first time and brought together two sides with an illustrious pedigree in the competition. Rakitić gave Barca the lead in the fourth minute but both sides could have scored two or more in a hectic opening. Morata equalised ten minutes into the second half but Luis Suárez restored the Catalans lead (68 mins) and as Juve pressed desperately for a second equaliser, Neymar clinched it with a goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

Ramos opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a strike that looked suspiciously offside. Griezman missed a penalty for Atletico but their substitute, Yannick Carrasco equalised to put the game into extra-time. In the penalty shoot-out Juanfran struck the post to hand the advantage to Real: Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and confidently scored the winner.

Real retained the trophy after overwhelming Juventus in Cardiff. The first half was fairly even and ended with teams level but in the second half Madrid were unstoppable. Ronaldo scored twice to take his team to their 12th triumph in the competition, a record. A sentimental moment came in the 77th minute when, despite an injury, local boy Gareth Bale was brought on as substitute. Juventus' frustration was compounded when Cuadrado was sent off in the 84th minute and Asensio scored Madrid's fourth in the final minute.

Real continued their remarkable Champions' League record with their third win in a row and their 13th overall. Benzema scored the opener (51') but Sadio Mané equalised minutes later. In the 61st minute Gareth Bale came on and scored two minutes later with an acrobatic bicycle kick, adding his second goal from 40 metres in the 83rd minute. Ronaldo might have scored a fourth in added time but play was stopped when a supporter invaded the pitch.

A year after defeat in the previous final Liverpool lifted the Champions League trophy for the sixth time. The match was tense but offered little entertainment. Sala put Liverpool into the lead with a penalty after just two minutes but supporters then had to bite their nails for the rest of the game before Origi made the game safe with three minutes to go.
