Sung Qingmei put China ahead in the 29th minute but with the final whistle imminent, Ulrika Kalte dramatically equalised deep into injury time. There were no further goals from open play so the teams prepared for the first ever penalty competition in the Women's World Cup. Gao Hong was the heroine of the match, saving two penalties to secure China a place in the semi-finals.

Lilly opened the scoring with a long range free-kick in the 8th minute and struck again in the 42nd following an awful mistake by the Japanese goalkeeper. On the stroke of half-time Milbrett fired home a perfect volley from 15 metres. Venturini wrapped it all up ten minutes from the end.

In torrential rain, the two strongest teams in Europe met in the final. Hege Riise opened the scoring for Norway in the 37th minute, beating two defenders as she carried the ball to the edge of the German penalty area before precisely placing her shot into the far corner of the goal. The second goal, scored by Pettersen from close range after the Germans lost possession atempting to play out of defence, proved decisive. It is claimed that 25% of the population of Norway watched the game on TV. The team's flight home was escorted by two Norwegian Airforce F-16s.
